This event is part of Light Night Leeds

We Are Stardust is a light projection revealing the magical world of galaxies and stars. The artwork, accompanied by an original soundtrack, explores the origins of planets, stars and life itself. As two galaxies merge, intense starbursts create the conditions for new elements, such as carbon – the basis of all life on earth – to be formed.

The cosmic processes at work in the birth of new planets are brought to life through dynamic simulations of interacting particles. We Are Stardust captures the wonder of gazing at the night sky and reflecting on our place in the universe.

Research – We Are Stardust is inspired by research at the University of Leeds by Dr. Alison Young, Stephen Hawking Fellow, and Conall Kavanagh PhD researcher in the School of Physics and Astronomy, and Adam Koval PhD (University of Edinburgh). The work of Dr. Florence Bell, whose work played an important role in uncovering the structure of DNA, was central to the development of this artwork. Images from Florence Bell’s notebook and thesis held in Cultural Collections and Galleries at the University of Leeds have been used in this piece.
